Allow me to introduce me to introduce you to the best kept denim secret in Australia: De Jour Jeans.
Let’s cut straight to the chase. These jeans cost me $50. Plus, they were hand-tailored to fit my exact body shape, for free.
Let me just repeat that because no doubt you’re currently experiencing heart-palpatations over what I just said, coupled with incredulous disbelief: perfectly fitting, hand-tailored denim for $50.
I pretty much ran to their store in Brunswick, Melbourne when Ben told me about it. The system is that you pick out a pair of jeans from the shelves piled high around the room, try them on, have one of the assistants mark any necessary alterations (hems taken up, waistbands taken in, legs tightened), pay, and then come back in around an hour to collect your newly-tailored goodies. The location is half shop, half factory, with a constant whir of sewing machines in the background, and an enormous range of denim styles are stocked (both male and female) with all the denim made in Australia, and the jeans made on sight.
It’s fantastic, old fashioned, and makes complete sense. After years of searching for denim that was roomy enough on my hips, but still tight around my waist, I’m kicking myself that I didn’t discover De Jour sooner.
