Well, this was something I never saw coming.
Up until age 14 (the 90s and early 00s) I only wore flares. They were comfortable, made sense, and looked rad with my spaghetti strap singlets. Then came hipster jeans, then came skinny jeans, then came along coloured skinny jeans (yellow, orange, mint and purple – guilty). I proceeded to spend the next 8 years of my life wondering how on earth I ever thought flares were a good idea.
But here we have it, last week I bought the one thing I thought would never make a return to my wardrobe – a pair of dark blue, bell-bottomed flares. and then proceeded to wear them to my 5-year High School reunion. Which, if you think about it, is weirdly ironic considering I spent the whole of High School thinking the tighter my jeans were, the better.
Back to business: a few notes on wearing flares if you’re feeling adventurous. It’s all about the illusion of super-long legs – wear them with heels hidden underneath, particularly if you’re on the shorter side (à la moi). For a more modern take, buy them in a dark indigo or black – acid or distressed washes are a little too close to home for me (a.k.a my entire childhood). I went for a mid-rise, because frankly I’ve had enough of how uncomfortable high-waisted jeans are to sit down in, and hipster flares ruins the hourglass illusion of the style. A shirt is a nice way to make them more drinks appropriate without looking like you’re ‘just’ wearing jeans, and if you’d like to steer clear of the ‘flower child / hippie’ vibe, keep it minimal with accessories and jewellery. Also, no spaghetti strap singlets, just to be clear. We’re doing a 90s / 70s throwback here, not a fully-fledged revival.
